Newcastle's Favourite Coffee Shops for International Coffee Day, Thursday 1 October 2026

International Coffee Day is Thursday 1 October. It's the first since the United Nations formally adopted the date in March, after the International Coffee Organization started it in 2015.

Here are 18 Newcastle cafes locals keep recommending, from new openings in Lambton, Adamstown and Mayfield to long-running spots on Darby Street and in the East End. Hours change often, and Monday 5 October is the Labour Day public holiday, so check a cafe's socials before you go.

Newcastle East and the CBD

Mr. Sister Coffee – Lyrique Lane, 18 Wolfe St, Newcastle Brother and sister Garth and Bec's specialty espresso bar in East End Village, pouring their Supreme blend. They moved back into the city after six years at Westfield Kotara, and run a second shop at Speers Point. More info

Monte Café – Shop 1, 42 Honeysuckle Dr, Newcastle | Mon–Fri 6.30am–1.30pm, Sat–Sun 7am–2pm Under the Little National Hotel on the Honeysuckle waterfront. Red Brick coffee, seasonal brunch and house-made pastries, with dogs welcome outside. More info

The Press Book House – 462 Hunter St, Newcastle | Mon–Fri 7am–4pm, Sat 8am–2pm Cafe and secondhand bookshop in the West End. Coffee, toasties and pastries, plus book launches and late nights for events. More info

Floozy Coffee HQ – 398 King St, Newcastle West | Mon–Fri 7am–2pm Espresso bar and roasting space for Floozy, which started as a micro-roastery in 2017 focused on single origins. Its beans turn up in cafes across the city, including First Light in Lambton. More info

Darby Street and Cooks Hill

Pum's Coffee Haus – 162 Darby St, Cooks Hill | daily, 6am–2pm Brock Youngblutt's cafe in the old Core Espresso site, named after his grandfather. Josie Coffee beans, Tuga pastries, and a 6am–7am happy hour with cheaper coffee. More info

Welsh Blacks – 84 Bull St, Cooks Hill Corner cafe at Bull and Corlette streets. Specialty coffee, home-style breakfast and lunch, and house-baked cakes. Another regular in reader-voted favourites. More info

Hubro – Shop 1A, 295 Darby St, Bar Beach At the quiet southern end of Darby Street, known for its Hu-brew cold brew served over ice. New owners took over in February 2025. More info

Hamilton, Merewether and Adamstown

Spur – 4 Samdon St, Hamilton From Minnie, owner of Arlo's Coffee, in the former Second Fiddle site a few streets back from Beaumont Street. Allpress coffee and a neighbourhood brunch menu. More info

Bostin Brew Co – 89–93 City Rd, Merewether | daily, 7am–3pm Cafe and drive-thru coffee next to a hand car wash, so the car can be cleaned while you eat. Big breakfasts, burgers and on-site parking. More info

Mill's – 187 Brunker Rd, Adamstown | Tue–Sat, 7am–12pm Opened on 31 July by Miller Roberts. House blend Mill's Morning Glory from Glee Coffee Roasters, rotating single origins from local roasters, batch brew, toasties and pastries. More info

Lambton, New Lambton and Mayfield

First Light – 75 Elder St, Lambton | daily, 7am–5pm Opened in April in Lambton Park's restored 1940s baby health centre. Floozy's Lucky Stars blend, batch brew and sparkling cold brew. More info

Scale & Bloom – 4/12 Alma Rd, New Lambton The former Sherwood (and before that Black Circle) cafe, renamed this year by owners Jasmine and Brett. The record wall stays. The menu adds ceremonial-grade matcha, deli sandwiches and all-day breakfast. More info

The Pocket Mayfield – 223 Maitland Rd, Mayfield | Mon–Sat, 6am–2pm Kat and Amy's cafe, formerly Side Pocket Espresso, which has been pouring for Mayfield locals since 2014. Single O coffee and toasties. More info

Mayfield Nook – 115 Crebert St, Mayfield A small new coffee spot from the Cargo Espresso Bar team, in the forecourt of Mayfield Aged Care. Sprocket Roasters coffee, house-made cakes, toasties and milkshakes. More info

Carrington and Maryville

Cafe Inu – 43 Denison St, Carrington Dog-friendly cafe in a converted tin shed, with a doggy menu and Japanese-leaning dishes such as the miso katsu sando. Inu means dog in Japanese. More info

Hayl Mary – 74 The Lane, Maryville | Wed–Sun, 6am–2pm The Praise Joe team's cafe on Throsby Creek, in the old Elementa site. Pablo & Rusty's coffee, rotating batch brew and a Barista Breakfast tasting flight, plus a chef-driven brunch menu and house pastries. More info

Lake Mac

Pegs – 157 Dudley Rd, Whitebridge Mel Chapman's community cafe, open since 2012, with a focus on local produce and baking. Italian nights run later in the week. More info
