Newcastle History: Shepherd's Hill - Guardian of the City
Once known as 'Sheep Pasture Hills', Shepherd's Hill transformed into a pivotal military stronghold overlooking Newcastle. In the late 19th century, responding to potential threats, an 8-inch disappearing gun emplacement was constructed, a marvel designed to protect the city and its vital coalfields. This marked the beginning of Shepherd's Hill's strategic importance, complemented by a network of underground rooms and the iconic Gunner's Cottage.
As the 20th century unfolded, and especially with the looming threat of WWII, Newcastle's industrial might, particularly in munitions production, made its defense paramount.
Shepherd's Hill rose to become the central nervous system of the region's coastal defenses. A crucial Observation Post, perched high on the hill, coordinated the fire control for batteries at Fort Scratchley, Fort Wallace in Stockton, and Tomaree at Port Stephens. This central command, utilising advancements in communication, ensured a response to any potential attack.
Today, Shepherd's Hill stands as a significant historical landmark. The remnants of its fortifications and the still-standing Gunner's Cottage offer a tangible connection to Newcastle's past, illustrating its crucial role in Australia's defense strategy and the changing face of military technology over time. It's a reminder that this seemingly peaceful vantage point once held the responsibility for safeguarding our city.

Community in Action: Raffle for a Remedy! (Reader Submission!)
We love hearing about the amazing things happening in our community, and this week's "Community in Action" comes to us courtesy of one of our very own Newcastle Digest readers! Their school, Merewether High School, is undertaking a fantastic fundraising effort, aiming to raise an ambitious $50,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation through their annual participation in the World's Greatest Shave.
The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national foundation dedicated to supporting Australians affected by blood cancers, funding vital research and providing crucial support to patients and their families. With the sobering statistic that one Australian is diagnosed with blood cancer every 27 minutes, this cause hits close to home for so many.
This year, a dedicated team of students at Merewether High are bravely shaving, dying, or cutting their hair to raise funds. To help them reach their impressive $50,000 goal, they're holding a "Raffle for a Remedy!"
By purchasing a raffle ticket (or a few!), you'll not only be in with a chance to win incredible prizes generously donated by local Newcastle businesses (think gift vouchers, products, and amazing experiences!), but you'll also be directly contributing to a vital cause championed by our local students.
The Newcastle Digest thrives thanks to the support of 2600+ subscribers like you. We’re dedicated to amplifying our community’s voice and championing local businesses and contributors. Help us grow by sharing this issue with friends—your referrals are essential to our success. Thank you for subscribing and for spreading the word in our local community!
