Newcastle Digest is still just an after-work hobby for me, run at a loss purely for the love of our local community. This year though, I’m hoping to take things further, switching on advertising, creating some products, and even planning a few events to bring us together in person.

Thanks again for reading, sharing, and supporting - I appreciate it.

Local gem

Flo Kotara

Tucked away on Joslin Street, Flo is a small cafe with a big heart, serving up delicious coffee and a welcoming vibe. Whether you’re grabbing a takeaway on the go or settling in for a catch-up, there's seating both inside and out.

They've also got some seriously good food options, making it the perfect spot for a casual breakfast or lunch. Plus, it's located right next to the famous Retro Rolls, which is next on my list to try. If you're looking for a new local favourite with great coffee and a friendly feel, Flo is a must-visit.

Let’s Talk About: The Future of Broadmeadow

Big news for Newcastle – on 25 March, the Council officially adopted the Broadmeadow Place Strategy.

This plan is being called a “blueprint for the next 30 years” and covers more than 313 hectares of land across Broadmeadow, Hamilton North, and parts of New Lambton and Hamilton. It promises thousands of new homes, new community spaces, and a world-class sports and entertainment precinct.

The idea is to transform Broadmeadow into a “vibrant destination” with more housing, jobs, public transport links, green space, and better sporting facilities. The strategy also makes mention of affordable housing targets, flood mitigation, transport upgrades (including talk of fast/light rail), and heritage protections.

During community consultation, 333 submissions were made - and now the rezoning process is moving forward.

For some, this is exciting: more housing supply, more jobs, and the chance to put Newcastle on the map with major sporting and entertainment events.
For others, it raises questions:

  • Will Broadmeadow lose its character?

  • How much of this “affordable housing” will actually be affordable?

  • Can Newcastle’s roads and public transport cope with this scale of growth?

  • And what about flood risks in the area?

This is one of the biggest planning moves Newcastle has seen in decades — and it will affect all of us in some way.

👉 So what do you think?
Is this the bold renewal Newcastle needs, or is Broadmeadow at risk of being overdeveloped?

Is this a good idea?
