Good morning Newcastle, welcome back to the Newcastle Digest.
There’s a chance last week’s email didn’t land in your Primary inbox, thanks to the flood of sales promos over the weekend (and, admittedly, because I mentioned it in the newsletter itself!). Hopefully, this edition arrived where it should, but if you missed last week’s, take a quick look in your Promotions folder. If you find it there, please open it and move it to Primary. It really helps ensure these emails land in your inbox each week, that’s all I ask!
This week, I’m kicking off a new topic I’m genuinely excited about. I plan to feature this at least once a month, so if you or anyone you know is doing interesting things across the region, I’d love to hear about it. I’d be thrilled to feature your work.

One Café a Week: Bolton Street Pantry – Newcastle
This week’s stop was Bolton Street Pantry, a long-time brunch staple in the city. The menu has a mix of Asian-inspired dishes and café classics, and everything coming out of the kitchen looked solid. We just grabbed coffees this time, buying breakfast every week would destroy my bank account, but the coffee was excellent. They serve Unison, a local roaster, and they do it well.
There’s plenty of seating inside and out, and it’s an easy spot to settle in, whether you’re grabbing a quick coffee or planning a longer brunch. Definitely worth a visit.

Locals Doing Cool Things: Project Aretê
If you walk into almost any health-conscious home, you will find the same thing these two mates found in their own cupboards: half-used tubs of supplements that were meant to change everything and make life easier but never did.
The two grew up in Maitland, spending their time on the field, in the gym, on the bike and at the track. They wanted to build something local and practical that would make healthy habits easier for everyone. Both admit they have a soft spot for sweet treats, so turning supplements into something that felt more like a small snack than a chore made sense. It was not about reinventing health. It was simply about making the things they were already trying to take a bit more enjoyable, to better support habit formation.
The name Project Aretê refers to excellence, the fullest realisation of one’s potential, and also the ridge of a tall mountain. The idea of gradually moving toward a higher point rather than making giant leaps felt like the right description of what they were trying to build and how they approached their own lives.
The last two years have been a quiet grind of development, testing, delays and repeats of all of the above. The moment the finished gummies arrived was the first time their project felt real. Friends in the running and triathlon community helped along the way, giving honest feedback on flavours and textures and keeping the process grounded.
They started with creatine and magnesium because many people fall short on them through diet alone, often showing up as low energy, poor recovery or ordinary sleep. Instead of trying to make a grand statement about fixing health, they focused on the basics.
Now they and many others use the gummies daily. They are easy to remember and fit into a routine without any effort. People who once never finished a tub of powder now take their gummies every single day.
Looking ahead, they would like to support more community events and get their products into a few Newy shops. They are also working on new flavours and products.
