Newcastle History: Convict Labor to Railway Hub - The Lumber Yard Story
Established in 1801 as Newcastle's initial convict settlement, the site at 98 Scott Street quickly became the Convict Lumber Yard, a vital industrial operation in the penal colony. Even after the closure of the penal settlement, the lumber yard persisted, later transforming into 'The Stockade' to house convicts building Nobby's breakwater.
The mid-19th century brought a new chapter with the rise of the railway. The site transitioned into a railway precinct, evidenced by the still-standing Station Master's residence and Paymaster's office, remnants of Newcastle's burgeoning port and rail infrastructure.
Archaeological excavations have unearthed significant and rare evidence of the convict era: foundations of barracks, industrial remnants like kilns, and early infrastructure. These finds offer invaluable insights into the lives and labor of Newcastle's convict population.
The Convict Lumber Yard, with its layers of history from Aboriginal presence to convict industry and railway development, stands as a crucial archaeological and historical site. It connects directly to Newcastle's foundational narrative, illustrating its evolution from a harsh penal outpost to a vital industrial center.
